The pupils. Real shapeshifting, or photoshopped? I can't tell.
Often if the light strikes someone's eyes just right, e.g. if they are facing a window, it will make it seem like they have vertical pupils. But then there will also be light reflecting brightly from either side of it, within the iris, which is not present here.
I think this is real, especially noting the EXTRA MEMBRANES under the eyeball. I really doubt this is common among RCs but maybe originally he was of a humanoid strain that had these.
Did he even notice he was doing this? Did anyone else? Unsure.
