People who use cannabis and other recreational drugs are up to a third more likely to suffer a heart attack or stroke, alarming new research has suggested.

3X, 133%, what's the difference?

But scientists in France, who tracked more than 1,300 patients in intensive care, found people who took cannabis alone had almost twice the risk of suffering a cardiovascular event.

Er, OK almost twice now. They even re-state it with slightly different wording:

Or maybe "heart attacks and strokes" are not "cardiovascular events". I TRY to reconcile this gibberish, but later we have

Seems an unambiguous contradiction. And they repeated both assertions,

In the study, researchers tracked 1,392 patients who were admitted to 39 {13X3} different intensive care units in France over a two-week period in April 2021.

Among them, 11 {11} per cent (157) tested positive for recreational drug use, including 136 with cannabis. 

The other 21 were found to have heroin, cocaine, amphetamines or MDMA in their system. {study included all of 117 with cannabis only, then}

Over a follow-up of a year, the researchers discovered seven per cent (94) of patients experienced a serious cardiovascular event including death.

Of the 713 patients in total hospitalised for acute coronary syndrome, 96 (14 per cent) had a positive recreational drug test and 50 (7 per cent) experienced serious cardiovascular events. {I gather, then, that acute coronary syndrome is NOT deemed a serious cardiovascular event? Just a routine one? 94 of the 1392 experienced a serious cardiovascular event including death, but only 50 of the 713 patients hospitalised for acute coronary syndrome did. Hence, the other 44 who experienced serious cardiovascular events must not have been hospitalized for acute coronary syndrome. They were hospitalized for something else. Or the doctors did house calls for them. Or they went directly to the morgue.}
