This month, the Florida Department of Health issued a notice urging Floridians to not be inoculated for COVID. It claimed that Ladapo is alarmed by DNA fragments in the vaccines.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration responded by calling Ladapo’s DNA claims “misleading” and “implausible,” while reminding people that the vaccines, which have been administered in the billions, have proven to be safe, effective and often life saving.

“The challenge we continue to face is the ongoing proliferation of misinformation and disinformation about these vaccines which results in vaccine hesitancy that lowers vaccine uptake,” the FDA response to Ladapo said. “Given the dramatic reduction in the risk of death, hospitalization and serious illness afforded by the vaccines, lower vaccine uptake is contributing to the continued death and serious illness toll of COVID-19.”

Rebuffed in the real world of medicine, Ladapo took his act to the fantasyland of Bannon podcast, where fringe medical opinions get a hero’s welcome.

And then things got worse. Ladapo was apparently so comfortable as Bannon’s guest that he completely lost all restraint.

The Florida doctor didn’t only say that he thought COVID-19 vaccines weren’t a good idea medically. He said they were the work of the Devil.

Seriously.

Ladapo called COVID vaccines ‘the Antichrist of all products” and said that they were showing “disrespect” to the human genome, “and that is our connection to God.”

This is groundbreaking quackery. We’ve left the world of fringe, discredited medicine here, and entered the world of fringe, dirt-road theology.

The idea that COVID-19 vaccines are the work of the Devil isn’t something Ladapo just dreamed up on Bannon’s show. While the leaders of mainstream Christianity have urged their followers to get vaccinated, a small contingent of Christian anti-vaxxers have used the Bible to make a ridiculous argument against getting inoculated.

They claim the vaccine is “the mark of the beast,” as prophesied in the Bible’s Book of Revelation.

That passage of the New Testament says that the Antichrist will come back to Earth and rule for a short time. During that time, all the Devil’s people will be identified through “the mark of the beast.” When Christ returns to vanquish the Antichrist, only those who had previously refused the mark of the beast would be allowed in heaven, the story goes.

So, if you imagine the COVID-19 vaccine as “the mark of the beast” used by the Antichrist to identify all the people who will be damned, then only Christians who refuse to be vaccinated will be eligible for eternal life in heaven.

I know, it sounds nutty. That’s because it is. But not too nutty for Florida’s surgeon general, who is now leaning on fringe religious views to bolster his fringe medical views.   

By calling COVID vaccines “the Antichrist of all products” on Bannon’s podcast, Ladapo has outed himself as even more loopy than previously imagined.

Like I said, it’s impossible to overstate the level of medical quackery that is being unleashed on Floridians.
