Apples are minor red flags, i think. How likely is it that a flower with a mature seed would find its way into the salad? The flowers would have been picked at a MUCH earlier stage. As should be painfully obvious to any gardener whether or not they have ever grown marigolds.

When to Harvest Marigold Seeds
It's crucial to wait for the right time to take seeds from marigolds. Plan to harvest the seeds when the petals are dry {DRY!} and the base of each bloom (the seed pod) is turning brown. Marigold seeds look like little pointy black and white slivers. These slivers are actually the marigold's fruits, called achenes, to which the seeds are attached.

When harvested too early, immature achenes will not be viable. So allowing faded marigold flowers to remain on the plant is an important step towards making sure the achenes are able to transform into future flowers.
