The twisted true story behind Stranger Things' satanic plotline: Character Eddie Munson was inspired by 'West Memphis Three' {3} murders of three eight-year-old boys - and the teen 'cult members' who were convicted of their deaths

    Fans were introduced to Eddie, the leader of the Dungeons & Dragon-themed Hellfire Club, in the fourth series of the Netflix series Stranger Things
    The misunderstood metalhead is falsely accused of murdering popular cheerleader Chrissy Cunningham and being the leader of a satanic cult
    The character and his storyline were loosely based on the portrayal of David Echols, a member of the West Memphis Three, in the documentary Paradise Lost
    Echols, Jason Baldwin, and Jessie Misskelley were teens when they were convicted of murdering three young boys in West Memphis, Arkansas, in 1993
    Eight-year-old Cub Scouts Michael Moore, Steven Branch, and Christopher Byers were found mutilated and tied up with their shoelaces in a creek
    Law enforcement was convinced the murders were performed by a satanic cult led by 18-year-old Echols, who maintained his innocence
    In 1994, Baldwin and Misskelley were sentenced to life in prison while Echols was given the death sentence as their perceived ringleader
    However, over a decade later, DNA testing, a technology that was not available in 1993, showed there was no physical evidence linking the three to the crime
    In 2011, Echols, Baldwin, and Misskelley were released with time served after negotiating Alford pleas that allowed them to maintain their innocence

What's different about this serial killer hoax is that it much more closely parallels the truth than the "general consensus" of what serial killers are. These boys actually did commit crimes of the type they were accused of. As, no doubt, did many others involved in the hoax.
