I understand that in China, as in many darker-skinned cultures, light skin is considered more beautiful and women sometimes go to some lengths to whiten up. Maybe men too sometimes. Soldier is charged with faking his suicide with cousin's help so he could go AWOL and travel to Mexico to 'fight cartels' as a mercenary
    Devin Schmidt, 20, and his cousin, Ryen Bell, 21, charged with sending a false distress message to the US Coast Guard after faking suicide in December
    Schmidt allegedly went AWOL from Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state as part of scheme to leave the US Army and move to Mexico
    Criminal complaint says Schmidt sent suicide video to his cousin and accomplice, Bell, saying goodbye to family and friends
    Bell then went to the police to report Schmidt missing and claimed to have found his dog tags atop a 150-foot cliff
    Coast Guard joined 10-hour search for Schmidt that cost $172,000
