Good stuntwork. How they probably did it:
Found the ideal place to saw partway through the tree, that would carry him to the ground.
Have him climb it.
Saw. Probably had a rope to pull the weight back a bit so the saw wouldn't bind, AND to keep the tree from folding prematurely.
Trees seldom just break in the middle like that. Unless there was a damaged spot in just the right place. They normally BEND a lot.
It was still dangerous, though.
